Today the NYS Judiciary Committee for apparently the first time in history, refused to send a Governor’s nominee for the Court of Appeals to the full Senate with an endorsement. The split committee vote comes after a contentious hearing yesterday on the qualifications of Professor Rivera to serve on the state’s highest court.
“There’s no question that Prof. Rivera is qualified to serve on the Court of Appeals -- and precisely because of her unique experiences as a law professor who has studied opinions, courts and law trends throughout the country for decades,” says Cartagena. “As a former successful litigator at the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund, Prof. Rivera definitely knows her way around a courtroom. We expect the full Senate to confirm this nomination after it reviews her extensive record of experience in the courts, as an administrative law judge, in the executive branch, and in academia. Her diverse professional experiences, as well as diverse background, clearly add a dimension to the Court that is sorely needed.”
