Media Advisory: Press Conference- Latino Community Calls on Federal Officials to Conduct A Full and Prompt Investigation into a Vicious Fatal Attack on Latinos and Suffolk Police’s Failure to Protect Latino Community
WHO: President and General Counsel Juan Cartagena; LatinoJustice PRLDEF; Irma Solis; Make the Road New York, Luis Valenzuela; Long Island Immigrant Alliance, Martha Maffei; SEPA Mujer, Maryann Slutsky; Long Island Wins, Victoria Daza; Long Island Jobs with Justice, Joselo Lucero; Hagedorn Foundation; Amol Sinha; NYCLU, Patrick Young; CARECEN, Osman Canales; Long Island Immigrant Student Advocates
What: The Long Island community calls on the Federal Government to complete a full investigation of the murder of Jose Sanchez, the failure of the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) to solve his death and demand accountability and oversight into the SCPD. The vicious 2010 attack on Jose Sanchez and Antonio Tum remains unsolved four years later, hidden far away from the public view. This case reflects a broader systemic failure of SCPD to protect the Latino community and investigate the crimes committed against them.
Why: The Department of Justice has failed to complete a full investigation of the SCPD and its systemic abuse of Latinos as evidenced by their failure to complete the investigation into the death of Jose Sanchez and the racial violent attack of Antonio Tum in 2010. These attacks occurred only two years after the murder of Marcelo Lucero and during the time the DOJ was investigating the SCPD. Additionally, accountability and self-assessment measures were created to monitor the SCPD’s progress via a Memorandum of Agreement, yet the self-assessment report remains unavailable.
Where: US District Courthouse, 100 Federal Plaza, Central Islip, NY 11722 When: Wednesday, July 30th at 2pm.
