Stand with LatinoJustice
Debo P. Adegbile, newly appointed by President Obama to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, received the Vanguard Award at LatinoJustice’s 2016 Gala in November and spoke compellingly of why he stands with LatinoJustice and why he has donated to support the Justice 2017 Fund. Below is an excerpt from his speech; you can watch the video of his speech here.
“It feels so good to be recognized by an organization that I respect so much. For almost 13 years I shared the elevator, I shared lunch, I shared the good days and the bad days with my brothers and sisters at PRLDEF, now LatinoJustice, and we fought in the trenches together. I fought with Juan Cartagena and a troop of talented lawyers and advocates who, like the Legal Defense Fund, stand for something, stand for principle, stand to make the American Project successful….
The great Nelson Mandela once said, “to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” I am committing to you that I am accepting the Vanguard award not for a single thing that I have ever done; but I accept the Vanguard award for what it challenges me to do in the future, for what it challenges me to do in the future in service of the cause of justice.
There are times in life when you can tell what somebody stands for by whom they stand with and I commit to you tonight and into the future that I will always stand with my brothers and sisters at LatinoJustice.”
