Puerto Rico Se Levanta

LatinoJustice PRLDEF to Help Raise Funds for Disaster Relief in Puerto Rico

Donate to Rebuilding Puerto Rico here and find out more about our project here.

It has been a harrowing couple of weeks, with the disasters impacting our friends and families in Mexico and Puerto Rico. LatinoJustice is in action. The first order of business was to seek out trusted relief efforts to which we could donate and direct donations for emergency relief efforts.

Thanks to our wonderful network, and our team, our LJP Líderes and Board members, we raised $10,000 this past week to send to two organizations doing tremendous work on the ground: Project Paz in Mexico and The Hurricane Maria Community Recovery Fund in Puerto Rico. We stand beside our peer nonprofits in their good work.

Mobilizing Legal Support

Now, LatinoJustice is turning its attention to the long-term recovery of Puerto Rico. Donate to the long-term recovery efforts here. Today, we open our Rebuilding Puerto Rico Project to do what we do best – mobilize the legal community to provide assistance to 3.4 million Americans in Puerto Rico as they navigate the arduous federal relief process.

We are part of a corps of attorneys that is training hundreds of volunteer bilingual attorneys and other legal professionals to work both in Puerto Rico and in states where victims of Hurricane Maria are migrating. We will help Hurricane survivors submit FEMA, insurance, unemployment and other public benefits claims and the follow-up necessary to ensure that they can access the funds necessary to rebuild their lives. We are collaborating with organizations and groups both in Puerto Rico and in the states in order to reach every Puerto Rican needing assistance.

Tell Your Representative To Act

Additionally, we are advocating to the federal government to exponentially deepen their assistance to the Puerto Rican people. We urge you to contact your senators and representatives by clicking here and asking for the following:

  • Repeal the Jones Act
  • Allocate $40B in additional federal relief funds for Puerto Rico
  • Extend the 60-day deadline to fill individual FEMA applications

We hope you will join us in Rebuilding Puerto Rico. Together, we can ensure that Puerto Rico Se Levanta!
