A Call to Action: Ask Congress for a Fair Confirmation Hearing for Sonia Sotomayor

Today we released a petition supporting Judge Sonia Sotomayor and urging Congress to give her a fair, timely, and substantiative confirmation hearing.

If we reach 10,000 signatures, this petition will be hand delivered to Congress and members of the media on July 13th, the day Sonia Sotomayor's hearings begin. We need your help to make this petition a success. Not only are we asking you to sign it, but we need you to send it to your personal networks.

It is easy to do, simply click here or paste the petition text (below) into another email, add a short personal message and then send it off to your networks. If everyone sends this message to at least 25 people, we will reach our goal by the end of the week.

Petition Text

On May 26th, Sonia Sotomayor was chosen to be President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court. Last week, the Senate announced that confirmation hearings will begin on July 13th.

Sonia Sotomayor has been the most dedicated of public servants over a legal career spanning 30 years. She has worked on nearly every level of our judicial system and brings with her an amount of judicial expertise unmatched by any Supreme Court nominee in the last century.

If confirmed to the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor will be the first Latina and only the third woman. Her nomination is a point of pride for the Latino community and all Americans, and we believe that her wide-ranging experience will be nothing short of an asset to the court.

Already some politicians are attacking her record and her character. These attacks are meant only to distract the American public from the real issues at hand and draw out the confirmation hearings so as to score political points.

We will not be distracted.

We, the undersigned, urge Congress to take a stand against these unfair attacks and work to confirm Sonia Sotomayor by focusing on her record and her judicial potential.

The previous two Supreme Court nominees were confirmed with the minimum of delay -- Justice Roberts was sworn in 71 days after his nomination, while Justice Alito was sworn after 91 days. Sonia Sotomayor deserves a fair and timely hearing and the American people deserve hearings free from needless politicization and distractions.
