LatinoJustice PRLDEF will not tolerate prejudice in Sotomayor floor debate
Judge Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation to be the next Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to pass the U.S. Senate this week with bipartisan support. Though many Republican Senators have said they will oppose Sotomayor, a significant number are also expected to cross party lines to support her.
"We are happy that the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmed Judge Sotomayor's impeccable credentials to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court," Cesar Perales, President and General Counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF said.
"But suggestions made before and during the committee hearings--that she cannot control her feelings or doesn't understand the constitution--are based on prejudice. The entire Latino community will now be watching the full Senate vote closely, and we will not tolerate any continued effort to embarrass her or declare her unqualified based on unfounded claims that personal bias affects her decision making."
